Domestic Air Conditioning
UK homes weren’t traditionally built with cooling in mind, but that’s changing fast — warmer summers, more people working from home, and better-insulated (and therefore heat-trapping) new builds have all pushed domestic air conditioning from a rare luxury to an increasingly common request. The right system depends heavily on your property type and how many rooms need cooling.
Single room or home office
A single split system is usually the simplest and most cost-effective solution — one indoor unit, one outdoor condenser, straightforward installation. Well suited to a home office, a loft conversion, or a single bedroom that struggles in summer.
Multiple rooms
Once you’re looking at two or more rooms, a multi-split system (several indoor units to one outdoor unit) usually works out more cost-effective and less visually intrusive than fitting several completely separate single systems. See our multi-split guide for the detail.
Whole-house and new-build projects
Ducted systems, with the main unit hidden in a loft or ceiling void and air distributed through discreet vents, are the usual choice where a completely unobtrusive finish matters — particularly relevant if air conditioning is being planned in from the design stage of a new build or major renovation, since ductwork needs space allocated before ceilings go up.
Period and listed properties
Older or listed properties bring their own constraints — limited scope for external condenser units, conservation area restrictions, and sometimes an unwillingness to run ductwork through original ceilings. Portable units or carefully positioned single-split systems are often the realistic options here; it’s worth having an honest conversation with whoever surveys the property about what’s actually achievable before committing to a particular system type.
Property types across Worcestershire
The area’s mix of Victorian terraces, 1930s semis, post-war estates, and newer developments each bring slightly different challenges — older solid-wall properties often retain heat differently to modern cavity-wall or timber-frame builds, which affects both system sizing and where an outdoor unit can practically go.
