Multi-Split Air Conditioning Systems
A multi-split system connects several indoor units — anywhere from two up to around nine, depending on the outdoor unit’s capacity — to a single outdoor condenser. Each indoor unit can typically be set to its own temperature and fan speed independently, making this the natural choice once more than one room needs cooling.
How it works
The single outdoor unit contains an inverter compressor that adjusts its output based on demand across all connected indoor units — running efficiently at low output when only one room needs cooling, and scaling up as more zones call for it. This is more efficient than running several completely separate single-split systems simultaneously.
Best suited to
Homes needing two to five rooms cooled
Small offices and retail units with a handful of distinct spaces
Restaurants and hospitality settings with a few different zones
Properties where minimising the number of outdoor units matters for appearance or limited external wall space
What to weigh up
Installation takes longer and typically costs more upfront than a single split system, since pipework has to be run to multiple indoor units rather than just one. This is usually outweighed over the system’s lifetime by lower running costs and a tidier external appearance than multiple separate outdoor units — but it’s worth being realistic about the higher initial outlay when comparing quotes.
When to consider VRF instead
