Commercial air conditioning brings additional considerations beyond a domestic install: larger loads, multiple zones with different needs, compliance record-keeping, and — very often — a business that can’t afford extended downtime if something goes wrong. Getting the specification right at the outset matters even more than in a home, simply because of scale.

Common commercial applications

Offices — usually multi-split or VRF systems, zoned by room or floor so unoccupied areas aren’t cooled unnecessarily

Retail — cassette or ducted systems that keep shopfloor space visually uncluttered

Hospitality — restaurants and hotels often need heat-recovery VRF systems, since kitchens and guest rooms have opposite heating/cooling needs simultaneously

Server and comms rooms — precision, high-reliability cooling with a genuine emergency response plan, since even short outages risk equipment damage

Warehouses and industrial units — larger-scale ventilation and cooling, sometimes combined with heating

Compliance obligations for commercial systems

Commercial systems above certain refrigerant charge thresholds carry statutory obligations under F-Gas regulations — regular leak checks, and a maintained logbook recording refrigerant type, quantity, and any work carried out. This is a legal requirement, not optional best practice, and building/facilities managers are usually the ones who need to keep this documentation ready for audit.

Planning a commercial installation

Larger commercial jobs often need proper design input — load calculations across multiple zones, ductwork or pipework routes that work with the building’s structure, and coordination with other trades if it’s part of a wider fit-out or renovation. If you’re working with an architect or M&E consultant, air conditioning specification should be brought in early, not bolted on at the end.
